The Aristocrat Cipher
REFERENCE: ACA, HARRIS, SOLVING SIMPLE SUBSTITUTION CIPHERS
GAINES, CHAPTER 9
BRYAN, VOLUME V, periodic ciphers, chapter 8, alphabet recovery
The Aristocrat cipher is an simple substitution type which retains word
divisions, (spacing) and punctuation marks.
An unknown cipher to be decrypted, requires CT-PT equivalent pairs.
An inspection may show 1 letter words ( A, I ) for trial. A given tip may
be placed at respective words in the CT, for trial, bringing out other CT-
PT pairs. Two letter words always contain a vowel (or semi-vowel). Word
endings are an excellent point of investigation for such as -ing, -ation,
-ed, etc. Doubled vowels are usually flanked by consonants and vice-versa.
In the tough ciphers, a statistical analysis will bring out hidden
aspects of the message. You may run from the work-screen prompts, the
option letters 'E & X' for this purpose. A hardcopy will be invaluable
during the work session. Frequency tables, contact charts, and vowel
identification will assist you in gaining the initial entry, from which
completing partial words will finally solve the message. Solution of the
key(s) is all important.
KEYWORD RECOVERY:
Type K1 and K2 Aristocrat ciphers will have a keyword in the PT OR CT
alphabets respectively. Therefore for a K1 type cipher read out the
keyword from KB (keyblock) line A2. For a K2 type cipher, read out the
keyword from line A3.
Type K3 ciphers; The same keyword is used to make both the PT and CT
alphabets.
Type K4 ciphers; The PT and CT alphabets are each made with a different
keyword.
The alphabets may have been MIXED thru a transposition block. They will
normally be identified, by such as K3M.
In the case of K3 and K4 ciphers, the KB vertical columns may have to be
rearranged in order to bring out the keywords. Follow the prompt line
instructions, and try to develop keywords in the KB. If the alphabets were
mixed, then the transposition block will have to also be recovered.
The volume by Harris will be invaluable to this process, as will the Bryan
keyword recovery discourse.
